Averaging Beam (Balance Beam): A long, floating device attached to the rear of a paver's screed. Its purpose is to use its length to bridge minor imperfections in the newly laid mat, providing a reference plane for the asphalt being placed, thereby ensuring a smooth pavement surface.
Ski: The wear part installed at the bottom ends of the balance beam. It makes direct contact with the previously laid mat or a reference guide (like a stringline). It moves via a sliding action instead of the rolling action of traditional wheels.
